Gameplay

Various gameplay details about THE FINALS.

Gameplay Tips

These informational videos were posted in the official THE FINALS Discord server during Closed Beta 1 in the "#eggcademy" channel.

Quick Melee

A melee strike is available to all contestants, which is activated by pressing the "Quick Melee" keybind (default "V" on PC). This will cause the contestant to perform a quick frontal elbow strike, dealing 40 damage to anything in range. It is useful for breaking through obstacles such as glass panes, or finishing off low-health enemies. The Quick Melee can be performed while sliding and running without interrupting the contestant's momentum.

Objects

Main Page: Arena Carriables

Arenas are filled with a plethora of objects that can be manipulated by contestants using their Gravity Glove. Important objects that contestants will regularly pick up include Cash Boxes, elemental containers such as the Oil Barrel (see below), and statues of eliminated teammates. Other objects include décor such as flower pots, chairs, and trashcans.

Elements

Gas

Main Page: Gas

Toxic gas deals damage over time to all contestants who remain within its radius for at least 0.5 seconds, and can be released through Gas Canisters, Gas Mines and Gas Grenades. Gas clouds last for a maximum of twelve seconds, but are easily countered by fire, such as the flames created by a Pyro Grenade, which immediately causes the cloud to combust and disappear.

  • Gas clouds begin damaging contestants at 30hp per second, but will quickly ramp up to 60hp per second after two or more consecutive seconds are spent within the cloud.
  • Even if multiple gas clouds occupy one area, contestants will only take damage from one cloud at a time.
  • Gas clouds are generally stationary. They do not expand, shrink, or move with objects while they were active.

Goo

Main Page: Goo

Goo is a substance which expands and becomes solid when it contacts terrain. Created by Goo Grenades, the Goo Gun, or Goo Barrels, it can be used to block passages or lines of sight, as well as serve as cover to protect against incoming weapon fire. Goo can also be used to traverse the map in untraditional ways. Just like gas, goo is countered by fire, causing it to break much faster, but goo will also break ninety seconds after it has been deployed.

Fire

Main Page: Fire

Fire is an effect that damages contestants over time, but will also spread across vegetation and certain objects. Created by Pyro Grenades, Pyro Mines, or Oil Barrels, fire is typically used to deny an area or as a counter to other effects or equipment in the arena, as it quickly ignites and destroys goo as well as instantly combusting gas clouds. However, fire is countered by smoke, which causes it to dissipate.

Smoke and Powder

Main Page: Smoke

Smoke is an effect that harms vision for contestants. Created by Smoke Grenades and Powder Canisters, it can be used to block lines of sight or make an area more difficult to traverse, observe, or fight in. Typically, smoke can be troubling regardless of the team that deployed it, but with certain vision or tracking gadgets such as the Thermal Vision or Sonar Grenade, it can be much easier to spot opponents within it. Smoke can also be used as an effective counter to fire.

Explosion

Explosions do immediate damage to both contestants and structures. Explosions can be created from gadgets and equipment, such as Frag Grenades, Explosive Mines, C4, or the RPG - but can also be created by some Arena Carriables, like the Explosive Canister. Explosions can also activate buttons, displace Cashout Stations, and potentially trigger mines or other canisters to explode.

Environment

Name Description
Zipline Ziplines allow for quick travel between two points. Ones that exist within the arena operate similarly to the Medium's zipline, meaning that they can be easily destroyed with weapons or melee attacks.
Jump Pad Jump Pads in the arena are present on multiple maps, but differ from the Medium's own deployable Jump Pad, which send contestants more vertically. Arena jump pads typically send contestants along a diagonal path, allowing them to cross large gaps without using a zipline.
Cannon Cannons are interactable environmental objects that can only be found in Monaco. When activated, they will shoot a cannonball in a straight line which will explode on impact. This can damage both the environment and contestants.
Crane Cranes, seen on multiple maps, are large structures that overlook the entire arena. They can be used as a vantage point, allowing contestants with long ranged weapons like the SR-84 to easily fire upon their enemies. However, cranes can also be moved left and right using the controls inside the cabin, which can be accessed by taking the zipline up to the structure.
Raiseable Barricade These dynamic walls are present on all arenas, and can be raised and lowered by interacting with a button. They cannot be destroyed, although the button can be activated remotely with explosions.
Elevator Two types of elevators exist in THE FINALS, which can vary depending on the map. Open-air elevators are a single platform, with a button on top and bottom. Hitting one of these buttons will cause it to move to the upper or lower state. Traditional elevators are fully enclosed, with multiple buttons, allowing it to stop at a selection of floors.

Game Show Events

Main Page: Game Show Events

When playing in a mode with them enabled, game show events are triggered partway through each round and will last for two minutes. These will affect the gameplay experience, so contestants need to be flexible and ready to adapt.

  • Game show events are enabled in most casual modes, as well as World Tour.
  • Game show events are disabled in Ranked Tournament, which reduces randomness and places a better emphasis on contestant skill.
