The Lewis Gun is a Heavy class light machine gun designed to deal sustained damage over an extended period at close to moderate distances.

Usage

The Lewis Gun can be selected as the weapon of any Heavy build loadout.

The trigger can be held to continuously fire bullets that damage opponents, also dealing additional damage on headshots. Aiming down sights increases the Lewis Gun's accuracy. Moving decreases accuracy, especially when going airborne.

The weapon automatically reloads when its magazine is empty, or the user can do a tactical reload before this point. The user has unlimited spare ammunition.

Strategy

Strengths

  • The Lewis Gun has a higher damage output at long distances than the comparable M60 thanks to its lower bullet dispersion.
  • The Lewis Gun has a large magazine and remain in combat for a long time without needing to reload.

Weaknesses

  • The Lewis Gun is beat by the comparable M60 at close distances due to its lower damage per second.
  • The Lewis Gun's large magazine size is compensated for by a lengthy reloading animation.

Tactics

  • Firing should always be done while aiming down sights, unless the target is extremely close. Doing so greatly increases the accuracy of the Lewis Gun.
  • A Lewis Gun user should plan ahead for a tactical reload while firing, since the reload makes for a long downtime. Usually, the Lewis Gun can outlast any opponent, meaning the opponent will be out of ammunition well before the Lewis Gun user needs to reload.

Mechanics

Recoil

Lewis recoil.png

How to control:

  1. Pull down and slightly right for the first 9 bullets
  2. Pull down and left until round 17
  3. Pull slightly down and hard right until bullet 23
  4. Pull down and left until bullet 28
  5. Pull down slightly until bullet 40
  6. Pull hard right until the mag is empty

Hitscan

When the weapon fires a shot, a target is scanned for using a hitscan. This is a detection mechanism that scans in a straight line, meaning there is no bullet drop. The direction of this line will be deviate randomly from the direction of the crosshairs, depending on the accuracy level at the time of firing.

Immediately, the closest contestant, structure, object or shield intersecting the hitscan will be tagged as being struck. First, a bullet tracer animation quickly travels from the weapon to the hit location, then its effects are applied. This means it is possible for targets to be struck a few frames after they appear to take cover, as the hit is confirmed the moment the weapon is fired.

Item Mastery

Item mastery XP can be earned by damaging and eliminating opponents with the Lewis Gun.

Each time a certain XP threshold is reached, the item levels up. This does not improve the item, but rewards a unique item customization.

Trivia

  • The Lewis Gun exists in real life as the Lewis automatic machine gun,a light machine gun fromthe First World War-era. It was invented by U.S. Army colonel Isaac Newton Lewis (not related to the physicist from the 17th century) in 1911, but the U.S. Army refused to adopt his design, most likely due to political differences. Frustrated, Lewis left for Belgium, where he established an arms company in Liège, and worked closely with a British arms manufacturer. Manufacturing then moved to England. In the First World War, the Lewis Gun began major production in the United Kingdom under the designation "Gun, Lewis, .303-cal".
